Reports of police brutality and violent closures of refugee shelters abound. Of late, hostilities have shown up among officials at refugee reception centres especially in the show-grounds of Pretoria.
Most of the clerical staff there, notably one lady and gentleman who both wear the Z.C.C. emblem; have become so hostile and rude. When asylum-seekers go to renew their permits, they are forced to sit for hours on end while officials group or sit chatting.
All those who have lost their permits and apply for new ones are immediately given asylum status rejection letters. Sometime last week a lady whose application had been rejected asked about appealing. The male Z.C.C. emblem clad official answered, I dont know about appeal. But if they deport you, just come back to SA. The problem is, you dont know what will happen. Wait and see what happens after July 11. These are the words of a home-affairs official.
