Zifa warns Gwekwerere on his I belong to Jesus T shirt

evans_gwekwerereHARARE - Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has warned Dynamos striker Evans Gwekwerere for displaying his I love Jesus T shirt everytime he celebrates the scoring of a goal. (Pictured: Gwekwerere warned of his celebration stunt)

The former Douglas Warriors and Moroka Swallows striker usually pulls up his soccer jersey to reveal the T-shirt. After the Dynamos striker scored a goal during his team’s 2-1 defeat of Harare giants last week, Gwekwerere ran half the length of the pitch and displaying the religious message, offending ZIFA. Gwekwerere said he celebrated in that manner because he was a born again Christian.

However, ZIFA have warned him that he would be sanctioned if he continued to celebrate in that manner. Zifa chief executive Henrietta Rushwaya wrote to Dynamos advising them that the player’s celebrations were “unsportsmanship conduct in terms of the laws of the game”. “By copy of this letter we hereby inform your office that player Evans Gwekwerere be given final reprimand for baring his undergarment depicting a message with religious messages.

“His conduct is in flagrant disregard of standard FIFA regulations on players’ celebrations through portrayal of messages on their undergarments, carrying political or religious messages. Please be advised that a repeat of such conduct by the player shall attract severe disciplinary action from the association. Refer to Article 4: Fifa laws of the Game,” wrote Rushwaya.

Gwekwerere is in top form at the moment and is scoring in every match for his team.
