500 million watch opening ceremony

SOWETO A global television audience of 500 million people are believed to have watched the FIFA World Cup 2010 opening ceremony in Soweto on Friday night.


A live audience of 85,000 gathered on the lush green field under blazing lights to enjoy the spectacle. Among them were jaw-dropping football squad and prominent stars.

Among the 1,581 performers from across the globe were Hugh Masekela, R Kelly, Soweto Spiritual Singers, Shakira, Johg Legend, Black Eyed Peas, Alicia Keys, Femi Kuti and also some local stars such as Amadou, and Hip Hop Pantsula.

A special tribute was paid to Siphiwo Ntshebe who passed away recently due to bacterial meningitis.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu made a brief appearance at the event to work the crowd at Africas biggest pop extravaganza.

Perhaps the biggest reason to watch World Cup 2010 opening ceremony live online, Colombian star Shakira had the crowd pumping as she performed the official 2010 World Cup song, Waka Waka This Time for Africa. She teamed up with a local South African group, Freshlyground, to sway the spectators with a heart-throbbing performance.

All profit earned from the sale of tickets to the concert will be donated to 20 Centers for 2010, a charity campaign dedicated to enhancing public health, education and development across Africa.
