Dance outfit Croatia-bound

The award winning Zvido Zvevanhu Dance Ensemble is set to scale to greater heights with a performance at the prestigious International Folklore Festival to be held in the Croatian capital of Zagreb this week.

This years edition, which is the 44th, will run from tomorrow until Sunday in the plush Zagreb where revellers will have a chance to watch the worlds traditional arts on one stage.

At the fete, where various traditional artists will be showcasing their talent, Zimbabwes own Zvido Zvevanhu will represent the countrys famous dances with repertoires of famous dances such as mbende and jerusarema.

The two- mbende and jerusarema- dances are listed among the worlds intangible cultural heritage on UNESCOs Representative List.

Bandleader, Gibson Sarari told The Zimbabwean that the band was excited about the chance they got to represent the country at such a high level

We hope to put our best performance because as you know we are carrying the countrys flag and we would not want to cast a bad light about our traditional dances, we want to stand out, he said.

The six-member band- a onetime winner of the annual National Arts Merit Award in the dance category- hails from Harares high-density suburb of Mufakose, and specialises in a wide variety of traditional Zimbabwean dances and creative performances in dance-drama.

Other members of the contingent are Charles Biniwere, Livias Chitsungo, Winnie Baid, Morest Chingawo and Charlotte Munyanyi.
