Cash crunch cripples de-mining exercise

HARARE A cash crunch after international donors withdrew funding has crippled efforts to clear Zimbabwes mine fields laid by combatants during the countrys 1970s war of independence, President Robert Mugabe has said.

The de-mining exercise is being carried out by national army engineers but some of the equipment used to unearth and dispose of landmines can only be imported from foreign suppliers.

In a speech to mark Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day last week, Mugabe said lack of funding had slowed down the clearing of landmines that continue to pose a serious hazard to communities living near minefields that are mostly concentrated along Zimbabwes borders with Zambia and Mozambique.

Government is faced with the challenge of funding the de-mining exercise of these areas single handedly from the withdrawal of aid by the donor community, Mugabe said. Government is committed to this noble cause of ensuring a mine free community.
