Celebration of acclaimed novelist

charles_mungoshiEDINBURGH Fans of Charles Mungoshi, the internationally known Zimbabwean writer, have been invited to an evening to celebrate his work as part of the Edinburgh Festival on August 27.

The event also seeks to raise money for medical bills after Mungoshi suffered a severe stroke in May. The writer has been convalescing in Harare and has been struggling to make ends meet.

I have remained a poor man despite writing immensely, he said, attributing it to a lack of transparency in the publishing industry and having no reading culture in Zimbabwe.

“The reason is that we do not value literature in this country. Even if we do it as a subject at school, we do not go out of our way to continue buying books of literature just to read. We are so blunt and have no reading culture.”

Friends of Charles Mungoshi will read extracts from his work at the event and live Zimbabwean music will be provided by Cynthia Gentle and Rise Kagona (Bhundu Boys). Entry free, 27 August, 1930, The Candlish Hall, St George’s West Church, 58 Shandwick Place, Edinburgh, EH2 4RT
