Announcing the development this week Econet Wireless CEO Douglas Mboweni said the move was the fulfilment of a promise made to customers a year ago.
Econets per second billing will be offered to both prepaid and contract customers, Mboweni said.
The cost of making calls will be cheaper, so traffic volumes will increase. We had to first clear issues of capacity before opening up to per second billing, he said.
With Econet being the only provider to offer per second billing across networks and on international calls, the biggest savings will be made on the Econet network. Per second billing will apply during peak and off-peak hours.
