The three-metre tall bronze statue which was made in the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK) is mounted on a 2, 2 metre long pedestal which was constructed by a Harare based Construction Company. The statue was provided by the department of the national museums and national monuments.
Speaking after touring the site of the statue, the governor and resident Minister for Bulawayo province, Cain Mathema, said the statue would be formally unveiled at a date still to be decided by the government.
“Although the statue has been erected we need to officially unveil it. To us the people of Matabeleland we regard this statue as the coming home of the late vice president” said governor Mathema.
He said following the erection of the statue, the Bulawayo city council should seriously consider renaming the street Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo. Responding to Mathema’s request the Bulawayo deputy mayor Elmon Mpofu said the council would soon meet to deliberate over the issue.
Some pressure groups in Bulawayo have threatened to remove the statue following revelations that the statue was made in the DPRK. The country is accused of arming and training the notorious fifth brigade.
