Mushohwe, with the help of war veterans and secret agents, has been forcing villagers to attend the outreach meetings, but the villagers remained adamant and decided to stay home.
Mushohwe’s meetings heightened fears that war vets, who have traditionally led violent campaigns on behalf of Zanu (PF), were mobilizing people to initiate violence once again.
“I am an agricultural extension worker and why should I be forced to attend Zanu (PF) meetings. I am employed by the government of Zimbabwe and not by Zanu (PF),” said a government employee from Mutare.
Recently in Mutare district, Madiro had to force government workers to attend the meeting after realising that very few people were planning to attend.
Meanwhile, the MDC spokesperson for Manicaland, Pishai Muchauraya, said villagers in Makoni South constituency in Manicaland province were living in fear, after soldiers in uniform roamed the area ordering everyone to attend Zanu (PF) meetings in the constituency.
“The villagers have told me that they are being instructed to attend the meetings without failure. Their message has been clear, that if they don’t attend they will be in trouble,” Muchauraya said. “Every headman in the area is being told to bring his people to the meeting. These are hallmarks of Zanu (PF’s) way of doing business,” said Muchauraya, who is also the Member of Parliament for that area.
He said the soldiers, moving around in army trucks, have been seen in the company of Happy Nyakuedzwa, an active Zanu (PF) member in the Makoni district.
