This came out at a meeting held by the Widows of the War Veterans Association, many of them destitute, in Bulawayos Entumbane suburb last week.
ZNLWVA Bulawayo province chair, Themba Ncube, heard concerns about governments failure to give the widows their husbands pensions – to which they are entitled.
They also complained about favouritism displayed by leaders at the Bulawayo provincial heroes acres when upgrading graves, saying their husbands graves were now an eyesore.
They said it was disheartening that the contribution made by their husbands towards attaining the countrys independence had been swept under the carpet as the government was failing to give them living wages for survival.
We were promised pensions but we are no longer getting them. Those few who are still receiving the pension get a paltry US$20 and at times they are told to go and get it in Harare. We want the government to at least give us a living wage that would enable us to pay for our upkeep because we have children going to school and other bills to pay, said Sikhululekile Ndlovu, the chairperson of the association.
Ncube told the widows to direct their complaints to Governor Cain Mathema who would then inform the government.
