Warriors start camp

zimbabwe_national_team_warriorsHARARE - Home based players went into camp on Monday as the Warriors began preparations for their 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Liberia in Monrovia on September 5.

Their foreign contingent, which consists of 13 players, will join the team five days prior to the match in line with FIFA rules. Dynamos defender, Guthrie Zhokinyu, who is at the top of his game, has won a call to the senior team. Zhokinyu believes the Warriors have the capacity to beat Liberia in their own backyard.

“I am really excited to be part of this team. It’s every player’s dream to play for the national team. I am confident we will come out with a positive result in Liberia. Having missed the last two editions of the tournament everyone is hungry to do better this time,” he said.

Care taker coach Norman Mapeza has named an enlarged 36-man squad consisting of home based and foreign professionals for the crucial encounter. There were, however major changes to the squad with the axe falling on club-less captain, Benjani Mwaruwari, and his deputy Esrom Nyandoro of Sundowns.

The Warriors are in the same group as seasoned campaigners Mali and the Cape Verde whose game has improved greatly in the last couple of years.
