Dance group fights for honours

club_houseHARARE - A new entertainment joint, City Sports Bar, will be running a dance competition for the next three months, which will culminate in a grand finale in December.

In an interview with The Zimbabwean, Biggie Chinoperekwei, the City Sports Bar director said: We held the first competition and we are expecting to hold more competitions within the next three months.

We realised that dance groups were not being given enough attention in terms of awards and rewards so we came up with this competition to make it up to the groups, Chinoperekwei said.

Most of the groups are talented and they need support and exposure. I hope this competition will go a long way in recognising their efforts, he added.

About 20 groups participated in the competition and the judges had a tough time agreeing on the winner. Some of the groups that took part included Explosion, Zola 7, Yizo Yizo, Diamond, Girls of Peace, Ghetto Queens, Syndicate Girls Millennium.

The annual competition would be classified according to gender to give all groups equal chances. There would be a category for all-female groups, another for all-male groups and also one for mixed groups. Individual dancers will also be considered in a separate category. The competition will award the best dance groups and best dancers in all categories, explained Chinoperekwei.

He added that the final would see about 20 groups taking to the stage in contest for the first ever honour for dance groups.

Chinoperekwei said: The prizes in the national final are still to be announced but I want to promise that there will be great offerings that are likely to take the winners to a higher level.

The competition is expected to go countrywide next year.
