Human rights are basic rights

EDITOR - Human rights are basic rights that all humans are entitled to and not a privilege which can be withdrawn. These are universally recognised and cannot be denied as everyone automatically qualifies at birth. Is this the case for Zimbabwe a nation where human suffering has gone beyond measure?

Equality before the law

There is no rule of law in Zimbabwe. Law enforcers are biased in their work and are guided by politics which has resulted in a total collapse of the rule of law. Government officials do not abide by the law and citizens are not treated equally. What is the reality of the state of order in which events conform to the law?

No to unfair detention

Under the dictatorship of Mugabe many Zimbabweans havent experienced the rule of law for decades. Numerous people have been accused, arrested and detained without reason and trial. Trauma and torture is the order of the day in overcrowded prisons and yet according to the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights nobody has the right to imprison anyone without explanation.

Right to privacy

There is no privacy in Zimbabwe as law enforcers are trained to monitor peoples movements, have the right to access peoples houses, property and even personal documents without their permission (houses have been destroyed under an operation known as murambatsvina, farm invasions, people murdered under an operation known as gukurahundi). There is a network of CIO agents throughout the country and many people are living in fear.

Freedom of thought

In Zimbabwe masses have no right to believe in what they believe in. Instead everyone should accept and conform to Mugabe beliefs.

Freedom of expression

It has been illegal to express an opinion and share ideas in Zimbabwe for decades and those who deny to be silenced are often police targets resulting in arrests, abductions, imprisonment, torture or even death.

Human rights are everyones rights and this should come to reality to the masses of people in Zimbabwe. Unless something is done now, the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human rights charter will remain meaningless to all Zimbabweans living in fear. These rights are a cornerstone for protection, justice, freedom and peace.
