Unite against dictatorships – PUDEMO

JOHANNESBRURG - A Swaziland opposition leader has praised Zimbabwean political activists for standing in solidarity with them, urging for a more united front by the continent's grassroots in pursuit for democracy.

Sikhumbuzo Phakathi, the Deputy President of Swaziland’s persecuted People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO), told The Zimbabwean in Johannesburg that downtrodden African people could turf dictatorships out if they rose in unison to demand what they wanted.

“People to people solidarity is the only option we have if we are to achieve democracy for all the persecuted civilians in Africa,” said Phakathi. “We have seen that relying on regional and continental leaders to solve the problem for us has failed to deliver the goods, as both the SADC and the AU leaders continue to side with one another at the expense of the people. It is high time that we, the suffering people of Africa, establish relationships that will ensure that we force until we get what we are crying for.”

Phakathi praised Zimbabwean and South African activists who travelled to his country to hold demonstrations as part of the Global Week for Democracy in Swaziland.
