Byo High Court grants urgent appeal

zesaResidents march on!
BPRA, through Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), successfully lodged a High Court application, this afternoon, against ZRPs refusal to clear a demonstration against ZESA tomorrow.

BPRA felt that the reasons cited by the police were not credible and sound enough to justify cancellation of the protest. The reasons given by the police for not granting the association a clearance were nullified by the High Court. The police had said that they do not have enough personnel to escort residents during the march yet they indicated that they have enough personnel to dispell those staging the demonstration.

However, due to the fact that residents would not back down, BPRA lodged a High Court application arguing that the polices refusal to clear the march was an affront to freedom of assembly as enshrined in Article 21 of the constitution. In this regard, the march from the Large City Hall to ZESA regional offices continues as planned tomorrow between 10am and 12pm.
