DA blasts ZAPU

democeratic_allianceJOHANNESBURG - South Africas opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA), Shadow Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Kenneth Sililo Mubu, this week strongly lambasted the revival of ZAPU. He also addressed the rumours of a possible merger between the party and the MDC-M.

Our view on the formation/revival of ZAPU is that Zimbabwe does not need the proliferation of political parties now. What it needs is the resolution of the long standing impasse among the present political formations in the country. Another political formation will only help to muddy the political waters of this unfortunate country, said Mubu.

Of course we realize that the people of Zimbabwe have a constitutional right to form political parties of their choice. Whether the new party’s proposed merger with the MDC-M will succeed will be tested by the electorate at the appropriate time, he added.

Speculation has been rife that ZAPU and MDC-M are planning a merger in a bid to stand against Zanu (PF) and MDC-T. This was after the MDC-M secretary for South Africa, Ngqabutho Dube, posted statements on the partys Facebook page that a move to merge the two parties was very much possible. Efforts to get a comment from ZAPUs South African publicist, Luke Sayi, were fruitless.

Mubu went on to criticize the South African government for sabotaging Zimbabweans by giving them such a short period to get their papers in order to remain in the country.

The South African government’s short deadline for the regularization of the many Zimbabweans in the country was not well thought out. It is unlikely that this process will be completed within the specified time frames. Therefore an extension of the deadline might be necessary.
