The issues raised by the vendors revolved around harassment by law enforcement agents, exorbitant license fees, the unavailability of proper vending structures, corruption and other issues to do with vendors rights. Vendors articulated that the process of obtaining an employers licence is too cumbersome and unnecessary. Those present to hear and respond to the vendors complaints included the city mayor, Councillor Thaba Moyo, the councillor for ward 1, Edward Manning, and representatives from the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Chamber Secretarys department in the city council. The association is hosting a series of these meetings across the city so as to provide vendors with a platform to mitigate their challenges through dialogue with relevant authorities.
BPRA will be staging a demonstration against ZESA in a bid to call for improved service provision and compliance with government directives. The demonstration will be at the city centre on 27 October 2010. Other civic organisations and members of the public are welcome to take part. Further details will be communicated soon.
