EU, ZFU signs two year contract

european_unionHARARE - The European Union signed a two year contract with the Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) where it availed a batch of vaccines which capacitates a total of eight million cattles, currently used to rehabilitate the national herd.

The rehabilitation exercise is being spearheaded by ZFU in partnership with the Department of Veterinary Services, targeting animal diseases such as anthrax, brucellosis, black leg, quarter evil and lumpy skin.

At the moment, a total of 2,4 million heads of cattle have been vaccinated under an exercise that commenced in February this year and expected to end in June 2011.

Most farmers were no-longer vaccinating their animals due to non-availability of and prohibitive cost of vaccines.

ZFU executive director Paul Zakariya said, The two year contract will go a long way towards rehabilitating the national herd that had dropped to 2,4 million cattle but now currently stands at 5 million cattle.
