MDC officials were today granted a US$30 bail each

mdc_symbolThe 17 MDC officials who were arrested in Nkayi Centre, Matebeleland North province on Thursday were today granted a US$30 bail each by a Nkayi magistrate.

The officials who include the MDC Matebeleland North chairperson, Sengezo Tshabangu were arrested on fabricated charges of causing violence. Tshabangu was chairing a meeting to welcome nine councillors who had rejoined the MDC after defecting from Arthur Mutambaras party.

Speaking after being granted bail, Tshabangu said the arrests were nothing but intimidation and harrasment. However, seven of those officials who were given bail today had to seek urgent medical attention after falling ill while in police custody. They were denied food and access to their lawyers. The magistrate postponed the case to 20 January 2011.

In Masvingo, Hon. Theresa Makone, the MDC Womens Assembly chairperson said, Zanu PF is misleading itself and riding on a false sense of winning elections next year. Addressing thousands of MDC supporters at Runyararo Primary School in Masvingo on Saturday, Hon. Makone who is the co-Home Affairs minister said Zanu PFs Robert Mugabe was being misled by those close to him that his party would win an election. She said the MDC would make sure that there was a clear road map in place before the elections that are expected to take place next year.

The road map for elections would among other issues ensure that the environmnent is free from violence and that there is an updated voters roll. The Minister said Mugabe was creating problems in the inclusive government by making unilateral decisions and appointments in clear violation of the Global Political Agreement (GPA). In Manicaland province, the MDC on Sunday held a sucessful gap filling exercise that saw Julius Magarangoma being elected as the chairperson of the province with Hon. Patrick Chitaka being elected his deputy. Hon. Chitaka is the senator for Mutasa Nyanga.

The elections were attened by the MDC National Chairperson, Hon. Lovemore Moyo and the National Organising Secretary, Hon. Elias Mudzuri. Meanwhile, Kuwadzana MP and MDC National Spokesperson, Hon. Nelson Chamisa sponsored a successful youth soccer tournament in his constituency on Saturday.

The tournament organised by the Kuwadzana Junior Soccer League (KJSL) and attended by hundreds of youths from the suburb, saw six teams battle it out for the finals in the under 12, 14 and 16 years categories. The winners in the three categories walked away with floating trophies, cash and soccer jerseys. However, all the participating teams received cash and soccer uniforms as well.

Speaking at the prize handover ceremony, which was attended by councillors, several company representatives and senior council officials, Hon. Chamisa said he would make sure that next tournament would have girls participating in netball and would include other sports such as basketball, tennis and volleyball.
