American teenage music sensation, Justin Biebers videos are a marvel to watch for most pop and R&B fanatics around the world not only because of the youngsters sensational voice but also off-the-hook dance moves by his dancers. Break dancing has been the in-thing for most hip hop and R&B singers since its invention by the late King of pop Michael Jackson. This dance style has seen singers like Bieber, Usher Raymond, Chris Brown and Jason Derulo gaining popularity with the young generation, in recent years.
Zimbabwe has seen new kids on the block, Real Flex dance group, seeking to make a name in the world of break dancing. For most Zimbabweans who do not afford flying to America for their beloved Usher, Chris Brown, or Jason Derulos live shows, watching the Dzivaresekwa young dancers will be a compensation they will appreciate.
People have received our performance very well at each and every outing. They love what we do and it has been so great for us to do what we enjoy and have people appreciating it, said Real Flex leader, Nathan Masvina.
Real Flex is a group of five passionate young dancers based in Harare. They break dance to different type of music, which range from the local sungura, urban groove and rape to international hip hop, R&B and soul.
Some Zimbabweans have less appreciation of music from dancehall artists like King Shady, Badman and Winky Dee while others have dismissed the music as totally unworthy the respect of their ears.
But the young dancers attach a meaning and value to such songs as Winky Dees BigMan by their dramatised dances.
From the fastest rhythms of Kwaito music to the slowest like Celine Dions My heart will go on, Real Flex will leave their audience warmed up for more.
Masvina (21) the oldest group member- teamed up with Tafadzwa Kembo, Valentine Mwareka, Nyasha and Tongai Zuze in 2005 to form Real Flex. Their debut performance at a high-profile show was in 2008 when they competed at the Jibilika Dance festival to finish in the semi-finals.
Masvina hopes to see the music and dance industry growing to emerge as one of the rewarding professions in Zimbabwe.
It is our wish that we will be able to earn a living out of dancing, it will be a great thing to see the dance industry becoming a profession people can rely on. I want us to dance our way to America, performing at a big concert there is our dream, said Masvina.
