Stars dominate showcase

HARARE - Junior Stars Harare proved a force to reckon with on the countrywide womens volleyball courts when they won the 2010 National Club Championships held in Bulawayo, last weekend.

Stars, who are the 2010 Harare league winners, beat six other womens teams that registered to compete for the national championship title. They cruised unbeaten in their pool matches when they beat Dolphins 2-0 and Railstars 2-1 to book a place in the semi-finals. Raiders were their third victims they beat 3-1 before outwitting Sharks 3-0 in the final.

Former Stars player and manager, Melody Gondo, attributed the teams success to their experienced head coach Martin Dururu despite his junior, Artwell Gororo, being the man in charge of the success in Bulawayo.

The team is dealing with an experienced coach (Martin Dururu) who has always sees to it that his team wins even back in my playing days, she said. When a team drops points during a game, they are bound to start shouting at each other and tension begins to grow. But we are talking of a team with youngsters who were taught to look to the next point and correct mistakes as they learn from them. They have worked very hard for every game they have played; winning the national club championships was just something they deserved.

In the mens showdown, Hawks won the tournament after dominating a round robin show against KOBA and Stanbic Thunder.
