THE DAILY AGENDA: 23 November 2010

Victoria Falls- Esau Ncube, a member of Victoria Falls Agenda who was arrested last week for contravening the repressive Public Order and Security Act (POSA) appeared before the Victoria Falls Magistrate Courts yesterday (22/11/10). Ncube is to appear in court again today for his bail application. If granted, Ncube will be made to pay US$100 for his temporary freedom.

Allegations against Ncube are that he said a provocative statement by saying Elephant Hills Hotel should change its name to Mashonaland Hotel probable because of the number of people from other provinces especially Mashonaland employed at the hotel than the local residents.

Bulawayo- Journalists in Bulawayo are organizing an action for the release of the Standard journalist, Nqobani Ndlovu. Nqobani appeared in court but was sent back to remand prison for seven days. Nqobani wrote a story where he said ZRP members did not write examinations for promotion as former police chiefs were recalled from retirement. He was arrested under the repressive POSA. Nqobani has been languishing in prison for close to two weeks now. Journalists have been calling for laws like POSA and AIPPA to be repealed as they are an anathema to the journalism fraternity.
