Fierce fight for relegation

HARARE - A fierce fight for relegation has emerged between Lengthens, Black Mambas and Shooting Stars as the league comes to its conclusion this weekend.

One of these three will have to join already relegated Douglas Warriors, FC Victoria and Bantu Rovers to the unfashionable life in division one football. Lengthens did themselves a huge favour when they edged Eagles 1-0 through veteran striker More Moyo to haul them back into the equation after they had been written.

The win took Lengthens points tally to 29 the same as Black Mambas who fell 2-1 to Shabanie Mine -setting the stage for one of the most intriguing conclusions to the Premiership season. The Happy People face log leaders Motor Action in a decisive tie in the last match of the campaign this weekend while Black Mambas will take on second-placed Dynamos.

With Shooting Stars winning against Monomotapa in the other match, it is Lengthens and Mambas who have to move mountains as either of them could face the dreaded chop come the end of the campaign. Lengthens coach Joesten Mathuthu admitted their final game against Motor Action was a do or die encounter.

“We are now back in the picture after we had been written off. The win against Eagles gave us very important points. The team played well and it is now up to us to mess up in the final match. The match against Motor Action will decide but it will be the toughest one because there will be a lot of pressure on the field and also from the media.
