Sports educate youth in Gwanda

footballGWANDA - Youths from the countrys 10 provinces were united and educated through sports at the annual Youth Education through Sports (YES) programme here last weekend.

Matabeleland South governor, Angeline Masuku, commended the Sports and Recreation Commissions brainchild as a programme that has shaped the future of Zimbabwean youth since its launch in 1999.

It is because of programmes like these that give youth a chance to display their talents and give them something to look forward to in life, she said.

Todays youth needs to be kept away from the streets where they are bound to indulge in misconducts such as alcohol and drug abuse. Life is about setting ourselves goals and live to achieve them, the YES programme teaches them how to face certain challenges in sport and in life without giving up.

The programme has in recent years decided the countrys representatives in the annual Norway Cup. Zimbabwe has been part of the competition as a result of a partnership between SRC and the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympics Committee.

This years edition will see the Magisoc Football Club (Manama High School) travelling to Norway to represent the country in the finals of the competition.
