Surgical centre hit by skills drain

BULAWAYO - Mpilo Hospitals general surgical centre has been hit by a critical shortage of specialist surgeons and forced to close.

Patients are now being referred to the United Hospital which, according to sources, is also operating with only two allpurpose surgeons. Mpilo clinical director and acting chief executive officer, Dr Wedu Ndebele said the situation was dire.

There are no specialists to cover the general surgery section and we saw no reason to keep that department operational. I cannot attend to further questions because I am in a meeting, said Ndebele.

However a source at the hospital said all patients who need general surgery were being transferred to UBH. He said the situation was critical and had endangered the lives of patients in immediate need of surgery. The 10-bed surgical hospital opened its doors to the public last December and was officially opened last week during a ceremony held at a local hotel.

The source added that some patients were now forced to fork a lot of money at the newly Bulawayo Surgical Hospital in the city.
