The Anti-Hijack Trust said the gang usually approaches its victims pretending to offer services to touch-up the scratches on their vehicles. Areas that have been reported as business areas are Borrowdale near the Post Office and Strathaven Shopping Centre, the trust said last week.
One of the victims agreed to have the con-artists repair a damaged headlamp on her vehicle but was shocked when she received a bill for $1 700 for the job. They later reduced the price to $200, which she paid. It is often not wise to use back street businesses as there is no come back on quotes, the standard of repair work, and mostly you are left out of pocket and the business men are nowhere to be found, the trust warned.
It is believed that some of the conmen deliberately cause the damages to the vehicles while their owners are doing their business at shopping malls.
