R4 million grant approved

mdc_logoThe MDC- run Bulawayo City Council (BCC)s application for a R4 million grant from the South Africa government for the citys water and waste water plan has been approved.

South Africas Department of Trade and Investment (DTI) approved the grant last week. A latest council report said communication advising of the approval had been sent together with the standard DTI agreement and a letter from the partnering firm, Stemele Bosch Africa giving a breakdown of how the funding should be structured.

The master plan involves the mapping of the infrastructure relating to water and waste water. The city of Bulawayo is growing and there is need for a master plan showing how pipes were laid out within the city in order to facilitate repair work. Last year, the Australian government offered $US4, 6 million to the BCC for a two year project to repair water and sewer systems. Bulawayo Mayor, Councillor Thaba Moyo has said the rehabilitation of the collapsing infrastructure at the water treatment plant would cost over $US1 million.

Meanwhile, a team of Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives in Binga, Matebeleland North province, has visited the homes of several councillors in the area and demanded that they fill in an updated elections database. One of the councillors, Clr Themba Mukombwe of Ward 17, said the operatives visited him last Thursday and ordered him to fill in his details and those of people in his ward. He however refused and the agents who were carrying a camera were stopped by the councillor from taking any pictures. One of the three agents identified is Muzondo.

The database has questions asking the councillors if the country is ready for elections, whether they will contest in the coming elections and if they have information on other people who are preparing to contest in the elections in the area. All the councillors from the Binga Rural District Council are from the MDC.
