Zimbabwe has gone through and continues to face great challenges and controversies. In this era of change I urge you not to let your voices be silent, but instead to let them rise to the rafters, Ray told students of Arrupe college in Harare at an event which was held to commemorate the life of American civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jnr.
Ray also called on the government to listen more to its people instead of always resorting to force to pressure citizens to follow its orders.
Without civil rights no people could claim to be truly free, the American diplomat said.
Civil rights, the basic freedoms that are birthright of citizens in a free society are the foundation not only of democracy and true justice. They are the cornerstone of a progressive, developed society. When people cannot enjoy these freedoms without fear of persecution, of discrimination or intimidation, they are not truly free, Ray said.
