Seke Teachers College in Chitungwiza and Morgan Zimtec in Harare have already held interviews for students who do not meet the traditional five subject requirement.
Speaking to students during the enrolment exercise, Seke Teachers College officials said that students who do not have either English Language or Mathematics will be required to study these two vital subjects before they will be presented with the diplomas.
Years of economic meltdown have resulted in the near collapse of the education sector. The situation has been exacerbated by the failure of the Government of National Unity (GNU) to lure back teachers who have either left the country or have decided to join the mushrooming private colleges.
Apart from this, people with the basic O-Level qualifications now shun the once esteemed teaching profession.
While many people have welcomed the move by the colleges to enrol many unemployed people roaming the streets, there are some who feel that the move is a money spinning initiative by the lecturers. Students are paying $20 per compulsory subject per month.
