Zimbabwe has been pounded by sporadic but heavy rains since the start of the season. It has continued into the new year. In the past 30 years, there have been only one rainy season wetter than this one in 2007. The Met Department is not promising a breather. “At least for the next days, we are expecting more heavy showers while the rest of the month is also likely to get good rain,” said head of rainfall in the Met Department, Tirivanhu Muhwati. The mid season is going to see lots of rains pouring and those in Region 1 and 2 should expect above normal rainfall, he said.
This can only add to the troubles of Harare’s burgeoning homeless. The rain can only complicate things for the street kids. But even as waterlogging, and traffic jams continue, the country is quietly enjoying this much needed respite from heat. The Meteorological Services Department says the 1st half of the 2010-2011 rainfall season was the 2nd wettest in 30 years, and
forecast that the second half will record even above normal rains, making it the wettest season.
The Met Department said Mt Darwin recorded the highest rainfall. Some areas had received rainfall that had broken records set as far back as 1968, such as West Nicholson which recorded 138mm of rainfall beating the 1968 record of 77,5mm. The season from October to December saw the country receiving above normal rains resulting in this period being the 2nd wettest in 30 years. The rains has been a boon for the new farmers. With financial support, the country is headed for a good agricultural season
