Dangarembga not quitting politics

tsitsi_dangarembgaBULAWAYO - Prominent writer and filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga (Pictured) says she is not leaving the political stage despite the turmoil that has engulfed her party, the MDC-M, as the top leaders jostle for power ahead of presidential elections tentatively scheduled for later this year.

The award-winning writer of the O Level school setbook Nervous Conditions and director of child abuse masterpiece Everyone’s Child told The Zimbabwean in an exclusive interview by phone that she would remain in the main MDC-M led by newly elected president Welshman Ncube, who replaced Dangarebga’s University of Zimbabwe contemporary Arthur Mutambara in what has been dubbed a “bloodless coup” by the media.

There are reports of a breakaway party by disaffected members irked by Ncube’s style of leadership. There were also reports that Dangarembga had joined a band of dissidents taking Ncube to court over his rushed appointment, but the writer says she is not part of it.

Instead, she says she is on a mission to bring good values, morals and a sense of accountability to African politics, something that she feels is lacking. “Politics should not only be for thugs and corrupt people. Its really about administering the community. It is up to upright and God-fearing people to stand up and do something instead of just criticizing. Dangarembga says she is involved in a project with young Nigerian writers after having had a bad experience with her publisher recently.
