The Green Schools programme adopts the sustainable development four pillar philosophy, taking into consideration the Policy, Social, Economic and Biodiversity issues and working with these in a holistic manner.
The main objective of the Green Schools programme is the development of effective EE programmes right across the schools curriculum that stimulate informed community participation in the development of ecologically sustainable ways of living.
Education is one of the keys to sustainable futures and what better way than by starting at school level and teaching children from a young age how to integrate the local environment into their every day lives including their education and to incorporate wise management of natural resources. In addition safeguards need to be developed so that schools can continue to be safe and protective environments for childrens development.
The overall aim of the Green Schools programme is:
* To challenge and motivate schools to develop and implement school based environmental policies and management plans that embrace issues of our times both locally, regionally and globally.
* To build links between schools and local, national and international environmental programmes.
* To promote informed community involvement in resource management and protection.
* To promote the evolution of schools into community resource centres.
* To encourage sustainable schools that involve the community in schools based projects.
The programme involves schools, together with local community committing to a Green Code of Conduct and developing school based environmental policies and management plans for themselves. Through a consultative process, a policy is formulated which is a statement of intentions and principles for improving the schools environmental, social and economic performances.
Audit task groups are then formed to implement the policies in an economic viable and sustainable manner with the ultimate aim of creating a holistic sustainable school.
