The body says the move to register mobile lines is intended to curb criminal activities. Failure to register by 28/02/11 will result in the disconnection of lines. No further extensions will be granted, read the notice.
While the motive by POTRAZ sounds genuine, there has been speculation that the move is meant to intimidate perceived critics of the government and Zanu (PF).
I dont think this is a genuine move, though the reasons given sound genuine. We are likely to see MDC supporters and members being followed up, abducted quietly or even killed, said one subscriber Tongai Magaya.
Efforts to get a comment from the POTRAZ were fruitless as the switchboard phones went unanswered.
