Maridzo in line for BSA Award

JOHANNESBURG - Africa super middleweight champion Tineyi "Marstak Power" Maridzo, is in line for an award when Boxing South Africa (BSA) holds its annual Awards dinner in Durban next week.

The Kambuzuma-born Maridzo (28) has been nominated for the Knockout of The Year Award, following his two successive knockout victories over arch-enemy Michael ‘Mickey’ Schultz last year.

Maridzos 2010 highlight was winning the WBO Pan-Africa super-middleweight clash in July when he floored Schulz and pocketed R45 000. Just over a minute into the match, the knockout saw Maridzo throwing a right cross and Schultz ducking into it, catching the blow on the side of his head. The shot switched Schultz’s lights off instantly. He toppled on to the floor and did not move again until the referee was more than midway through the count.

Schultz, who is alleged to have been involved in the killing of mining magnate Brett Kebble, tried hard to stand up, but when he lifted his hands off the canvas he lost his balance and slumped into the ropes. The fight had lasted 87 seconds.
