One-man play Graveyard a big hit

HARARE A one-man play called Graveyard, which brings out how our country has been turned into a grave, has become a hit.

Penned and acted by Herbert Phiri, a founder member of Amakhosi Theatre Productions, the play takes a swipe at the countrys incendiary political situation. In the play, a security guard works at the graveyard where a former commander and a minister are buried.

The minister died under mysterious circumstances after being found carrying opposition partys posters. The play points out how politicians have let down the nation and failed to keep the economy on its feet. It also talks about the flawed judicial system which sees political activists arrested on trumped-up charges, and highlights arbitrary decisions being taken by a ruling party which ruins the country.

In the play the security guard says: Oh look at what your government has done to us. It has given itself power to seize everything. It has given itself the right to intervene in any sector any time anywhere. They are unpredictable. In an interview, Phiri said: I wrote the play in 2009 when the country was in severe financial crisis. It calls for the government not to pass some dangerous decisions that can turn the country into a graveyard. There are some people buried in graveyards who have no say on how a country should be run.

Some people in this country are good as dead because they have no freedom and have lost the right to question certain politicians, he added. Launched at Amakhosi late last year, the play that has become a major hit and will now be staged throughout the country.

I am in the process of raising some money so that I can travel to rural areas and stage the play. I feel that people in the rural areas should also know what is happening around them, Phiri said.
