POTRAZ won’t extend February deadline

The Postal and telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) has said it will not extend the 28 February deadline for the registration of mobile lines.

According to a notice published by the regulatory body, failure to register ones sim card by the deadline will result in penalties being instituted on the consumers.

The body says the move to register mobile lines is intended to curb criminal activities by the telecommunication users which among others said were to: combat criminal activity and abuse of mobile phones by certain individuals.

Failure to register by 28/02/11 will result in the disconnection of lines. No further extensions will be granted, read the notice.

While the motive by POTRAZ sounds genuine, there has been speculation that the move is meant to intimidate perceived critics to the government and Zanu (PF).

I dont think this is a genuine move though the reasons given sound genuine, we are likely to see MDC supporters and members being followed up abducted quietly or even killed, said one subscriber Tongai Magaya.

Efforts to get a comment from the POTRAZ were fruitless as the switchboard phones went unanswered.
