Dhewa scores big with ‘Officer’ dance

tongai__moyo_dehwaRUSAPE - The sungura hit maker, Tongai 'Dhewa' Moyo, has struck another home run following the prominence of his new hit dance Officer which has won over the hearts of many revellers. (Pictured: Tongai Moyo has come up with a unique dance that the fans love)

The Utakataka Express front man’s new hit dance has silenced all critics who previously accused Dhewa of imitating other bands’ dance routines. During Dhewa’s performance at Mupfumi Supermarket in Mutare, Great Njanji, his new dancer, made his way to the stage in a custom-made security guard uniform mimicking the police force drills with a spontaneous sungura flair, much to the delight of the crowd.

This has been the routine whenever Utakataka Express makes its way on stage. In an interview with Showbiz on Sunday, Dhwea said the new dance came as a result of his desire to come up with a unique style of dance through talent scouting.

“I was informed on several occasions that there was a popular dance being performed by a certain guy in beer halls. I later decided to go and see the uniqueness of the dance. When I saw the guy (Great Njanji) performing, I was taken back to the year 2002. Njanji’s moves were sort of similar to one of our late dancers who we used to call Mahobho (security guard).

“After his death I always felt a strong edge to revive the dance. I was also searching for a unique dance different from Borrowdale or any other type of dance for that matter, yet still relevant to sungura and Njanji filled that void,” chronicles Dhewa before revealing that he had to polish Njanji’s moves after taking him on board.

He added that the name Officer came as a result of the moves portrayed in the dance which are similar to police drills mixed in a sungura rhythmic beat. Dhewa, however, hastened to point out that it does not mock the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
