The hospital has been operating with a six body mortuary since its opening, which was no longer able to cater for the increasing number of dead bodies at the centre. This situation resulted in more bodies decomposing before they were
taken for burial.
The mortuary was refurbished by Ministry of Public Works at a cost of US$73 500. Public Works minister, Joel Gabbuza said:
“The refurbishment of this mortuary was one of the major projects earmarked by our ministry. Our next phase will be the construction of administration block, six wards, kitchen and laundry”.
Dr Madzorera said there was need to construct refrigerated mortuaries in all rural health centres to relieve pressure and congestion in urban hospitals. He also said there was need to do away with user fees for patients nationwide as this had impacted on the lives of poor who were failing to access health care in local hospitals due financial challenges.
