They are facing false charges of assaulting an unidentified person. Today the 10 went through a police parade. At the High Court, Hon. Elton Mangoma, the MDC Deputy Treasurer General and Energy and Power Development Minister who was arrested last week was today granted a US$5 000 bail by Justice Samuel Kudya. Hon. Mangoma is facing trumped up charges of abusing public office as Energy Minister and was committed at the Harare Remand Prison. He was indicted at Harare Magistrates Courts for trial at the High Court on 28 March.
The State was opposing bail alleging that Hon. Mangoma was a flight risk and would interfer with State witnesses. However, Justice Kudya dismissed the States claims saying the State had no tangible facts to warrant Hon. Mangomas conviction. The judge said the State had scant facts against Hon. Mangoma. The judge said the actions of Hon. Mangoma in assisting in the procurement of fuel were a response to a national crisis and the people of Zimbabwe were looking up to him to resolve the crisis.
In Nyanga district, Manicaland province, five MDC members who were in remand prison on allegations of political violence were today granted bail. Paul Mawadza, Zivanai Chimbudzi, Freedom Kanjira, Chamunorwa Mukoto and Andrew Nyabasa were each granted a US$50 bail by a Nyanga magistrate.
