MDC-USA PROVINCIAL CONGRESS SET FOR MARCH 5, 2011

mdc_logoThe Movement for Democratic Change-USA (MDC-USA) will hold its provincial Congress at the Wyndham Hotel in Cincinnati Ohio on March 4-5, 2011. The theme for the MDC-USA 2nd Congress is WE ARE THE CHANGE WE SEEK.

The Congress follows the successful conclusion of District elections that began with Massachusetts elections on January 29 and ended with elections in Philadelphia, Washington DC and Washington-Seattle on February 28, 2011. The Congress will be presided over by the MDC National Chairman and Speaker of Parliament of Zimbabwe Hon. Lovemore Moyo.

Ten Districts were elected. They are with their Chairpersons Cincinnati (Mary Abdul), Columbus (Zvidzai Ruzvidzo), Dallas (Cornelius Musimbe), Dallas Fort Worth (Rev Phineas Bonda), Michigan (Andrew Chaponda), Massachusetts (Phillip Chidarikire), Florida (Dr Chris Kwangwari), Philadelphia (Nicholas Mada), Washington DC (Muzi Ncube) and Seattle Washington (Chengetai N. Chitewere).

The District elections and Congress are part of the MDC-T preparations for the National Congress that will be held in Zimbabwe in May this year. The District elections also promise to bring a new chapter in the relations among some Districts and the Province in the USA following years of friction between the Provincial Executive and some members who were suspended for conduct likely to put the name of the party into disrepute. All suspensions were lifted prior to the elections which cleared the way for all MDC members in good standing to be able to stand for any office at the District as well as Provincial Congress.

We had a smooth, transparent, free and fair District election process. The ten districts that have successfully completed the exercise played by the rules for conducting those elections and I am happy to say the ground is now set for a new chapter in the MDC-USA relations, first as a Province and secondly and even more important in our relations with MDC in Zimbabwe.

As the outgoing Chairman of the Province, I would like to congratulate all the Districts within our province for the maturity, hard work and sacrifice they displayed during and after the exercise. It is my fervent hope that this spirit of selflessness, dedication and cooperation will continue during and after the Congress in Cincinnati. I look forward to a successful and purpose driven Congress and new leadership that will steer the Provincial affairs forward over the next five years, said Dr Maxwell Shumba.

Dr Shumba added that the Congress will be testimony to our continued struggle for change. I would like this Congress to be radically different from the status quo in that as an external assembly we should focus less on what it means for us as individuals but what it means for the greater and oppressed people of Zimbabwe. It is not about who gets elected into which position but what we all can do to help our party push forward the agenda for change. Petty differences and self grandstanding only serve to weaken the movement and strengthen those who oppress us. We have seen what role social media and citizens in the Diaspora can play to mobilize and focus the global attention to peoples struggle against oppression. This is what we should focus on, make ZANU PF extremely uncomfortable and on notice about impending change, he said.

The Congress highlight will be the election of a new Executive committee comprising Chairman, Vice Chairman, Organizing Secretary, Vice Organizing Secretary, Secretary, Vice Secretary, Treasurer, Secretary Information and Publicity, Chairperson-Woman Affairs, and Youth Chairperson. A number of portfolio Secretaries will also be appointed by the Chairman on recommendation of the External Assembly.
