Three MLF members – Paul Siwela, John Gazi and Charles Thomas were recently arrested by Zimbabwean police, who are said to be following orders from their Commissioner, Augustine Chihuri to crush the new movement. However, the movement said this week that it will not back down from its demands.
“We wish to underline that the right to self-determination is a human right and that Mthwakazi people will continue to pursue the attainment of this ideal without fear,” MLF secretary for information and publicity, David Magagula, said.
He said that the call for secession comes as a cry for basic human rights by the people of Matabeleland and Midlands , which they say they are being robbed of on a daily basis, adding that the arrests seemed awkward as this is a month for human rights.
“We believe that the Mthwakazi people’s grievances justify our demand for the independence and full sovereignty of the state of Mthwakazi and this goal we wish to attain peacefully, added Magagula.
A number of opposition parties, especially from Matabeleland, have a reputation to come and go, with the future of those remaining looking rather bleak and it remains to be seen if the MLF will stick it out in Zimbabwes volatile political situation.
