New curriculum on the cards

david_coltartHARARE Zimbabwes school curriculum is in need of review in order to encompass new subjects, according to the Minister of Education Sports and Culture, David Coltart (pictured).

He said that the country was still to implement the Dziramasanga Commission findings on the country’s education and he has dispatched curriculum development experts to work on a new curriculum for both secondary and primary schools by 2013.

“We are going to have a comprehensive curriculum review so that what we teach enables our students to compete with others from the region,” said Coltart.

The Dziramasanga Commission recommended the introduction of nine years of basic education followed by a three pathway specialisation for the third and fourth year of secondary school; academic, commercial and technical vocational. Public examinations at grade seven will be discontinued and replaced by in-school examinations.
