The call by the top US envoy came on the heels of Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri appearance in Parliament where he accused the MDC of having been instigating the violence. Chihuri accused the MDC of being the merchants of terror.
During the launch of the anti-sanctions campaign, President Robert Mugabe condemned violence, but it is still to be seen whether his vicious supporters will take heed and relent from committing acts of terror and intimidation against perceived MDC supporters.
Page urged Mugabe to walk the talk and convey the same message to the security sector who are headed by the likes of Chihuri who at one point said that he will not salute Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. We recognize that not everyone within the Zimbabwe Republic Police and armed forces supports or is engaged in violence. The United States applauds those patriots serving their fellow citizens and their country by maintaining law, order and stability.
I urge these security service members to stand up to the partisan few among them who are intent on abusing their positions, and their fellow citizens, for personal gain. Service to extremists within one party is not service to the nation, said Page.
While senior members of the uniformed forces have remained pro-Zanu PF there juniors are more professional and are only but forced to implement orders from the top.
