Refugee Bill gets the vote

CAPE TOWN - South Africa this week moved step closer towards enacting the Refugee Amendment Bill after it received a majority endorsement by the Parliament.

The legislation, which will have significant implications on Zimbabweans applying for asylum in South Africa, now requires debate in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and the signature of President Jacob Zuma, to become law.

Home Affairs Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who introduced the bill to Parliament, welcomed the majority vote. She said once enacted, the legislation would reduce abuse of the refugee application system by bogus asylum seekers.
