I was born in 1957 and so lived through UDI and understand what real sanctions mean. I would also like to make it clear that in no way will I ever condone the way in which the RF treated the indigenous people of Zimbabwe and, in fact, any who dared to oppose them, irrespective.
Zanu (PF) has treated their people in a like manner. At times it is even far worse. And I certainly do not condone this either. Both parties deserved to be sanctioned and the current “sanctions,”- if that is what they are – are a teddy bears picnic compared to those imposed in 1965. It would be simple for Zanu (PF) to get the “targeted sanctions” removed. They need simply comply with the agreement they appended their signature to.
Zanu (PF), in their sanctions campaign, according to Newsday, Wednesday March 2/2011 claim that this sanctions campaign is a national event. They go on to say and I quote, “This is a rare opportunity for all of the people of Zimbabwe, irrespective of colour, creed or political affiliation, who have been affected by the illegal sanctions.”
Have Zanu (PF) forgotten how they treat us of a different colour and those of different political affiliations? I am simply disgusted. Zanu (PF) must put their money where their big mouths are and begin to treat all Zimbabweans as they, themselves, would like to be treated.
43 and more people languish in jail on trumped up charges. People are forced to sign their petition. Business simply plummeted or came to a screeching standstill on Wednesday. What I would like to tell Zanu (PF) is that it isn’t sanctions that have affected Zimbabwe but Zanu (PF) itself that has wrought the destruction and affected us all. Are Zimbabweans free to march peacefully? No! Are Zimbabweans free to protest peacefully? No!
Most of us, at one time or another, supported Zanu (PF) after independence and threw our weight and hope into making Zimbabwe work. They have lost that support and squandered an amazing chance to leave behind a wonderful legacy. They are killing their heritage! To Zanu (PF) I say to you today out of a heart of Christ’s compassion, “No matter how far you have gone on a wrong road – turn back.” (Author unknown)
