Text books for high schools

david_coltart_educationCHITUNGWIZA - The Government of Zimbabwe which has successfully distributed textbooks to all primary schools in the country will, from mid-April, embark on another ambitious transition programme to distribute books to secondary schools in six core subjects. (

The Minister of Education Sports and Culture, David Coltart, made the announcement this week at the launch of Peri-Urban Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting Programme at Tasimukira Primary School in Chitungwiza. Coltart said that he has had assurances from support partners that the funds were now available and delays were only a result of logistical considerations.

We have secured the money and the Education Consultation group, that includes UNICEF, agreed that we can start giving secondary schools books,” said Coltart. Due to underfunding in the critical sector, most secondary schools do not have adequate text books and as many as 10 students share a single book. Coltart said that his ministry was taking time to identify the particular needs of the schools.

“In primary schools we simply went out to tender and in some cases we acquired books that were already there at the schools. We have had more time in secondary schools and we have looked at the particular needs of schools,” said Coltart. “We are going to engage different publishers to distribute books and by the mid of the second term we will begin distributing textbooks in six core subjects to secondary schools.
