Ajax crippled by Billiats injury

JOHANNESBURG - Ajax Cape Towns prospects of a first league title suffered a further blow when Zimbabwean international Khama Billiat was ruled out of the rest of the season following injury.

The hotshot former Caps United player limped off in pain deep into the second half of the 4-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. The club said the player pulled a calf muscle and will not heal in time for the clash against Maritzburg United next week. Billiat has been one of the standout performers in the young sides push for a league title, scoring eight goals in his maiden season in the Absa Premiership.

He however was a pale shadow of himself as rampant Chiefs outplayed, outmuscled and outthought the Cape Town team in Limpopo. Fullback Jimmy Taurai Tau kept the speedy 20 year old under lock and key until his setback. Besides Billiat, Ajax will also miss the services of Thembinkosi Fanteni in the final match of the season against Maritzburg united.

The player received a yellow card against Chiefs. Despite the setbacks, meanwhile, coach foppe de Haan is confident Ajax will pull through. We are still in the race especially if we win our next game. Chiefs played a very good game against us and it is now up to us to make sure that we do not repeat the same mistakes against Maritzburg. The results with all the teams fighting for the league title were on our side on the day, but it does not mean we must take it easy now. But at the same time, right now, we still have a slight advantage, he said this week.

Ajax will win a historic title if they get maximum points against Maritzburg or if fellow contenders Orlando Pirates fail to win their last matches.
