Young Sables hope to upset Japan

HARARE - The Zimbabwe Under-20 rugby side will begin their 2011 Junior World Rugby Trophy campaign with a fixture against Japan at Georgias Shevardeni Stadium on Tuesday with victory in mind for their targeted top four finish.

Experienced captain Marco Mama together with Takudzwa Mandiwanza, Takudzwa Jaravaza, Charles Jiji and Tatenda Karuru, who participated at last years edition of the showpiece in Russia, will be expected to put up an exemplary performance for the rest of the international debutants making up the team.

Mama, Mandiwanza, Jaravaza, Jiji and Karuru will be looking at leaving a mark at their last show of the international junior tourney hoping they push Zimbabwe into another level. We hope to use our experience from last year to help the team prove competitive in the tournament and hope that Zimbabwe remains a force to reckon with at that level, said Mama.

The Young Sables will play the rest of their fixtures against Pool B sides, Canada and the host nation this week. The Zimbabweans finished seventh in the Russian showdown last year, having lost 6-22 to Canada and drew 20-20 against Japan. But this year coach Brighton Chivandire hopes their knowledge of the teams will assist them in strategizing their game although he acknowledged his troops would march onto the field as amateurs in this game.

We are definitely amateurs in the way the game is run internationally but I have been impressed with the performance of the boys under those circumstances. The fact that we have performed at this level before gives us a picture of what to expect in this competition. We will certainly do our best, he said.
