Botswana’s permanent secretary for agriculture, Micus Chimbombi, has said the neighbouring country will donate foot and mouth vaccines to Zimbabwe to combat the highly-contagious air bone disease.

Botswana has already sent a delegation, headed by Chimbombi, to assess the intensity of the recent outbreaks.

“The vaccines will be used to treat animals on the border of the two countries, in order to combat the foot and mouth outbreaks.

“At the moment a team, headed by myself, is already working out technical details to determine the amount of vaccines required, and the number of times the animals would be treated.”

There have been several cases of foot and mouth outbreaks reported in the country during the last few months, especially in the Matabeleland South.

Chimbombi said containing the outbreaks was vital for the beef industries and safeguarding lucrative European Union export markets.
