Byo to sign MOU with Durban

The City Council is to officially sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the South African city of Durban, in a move that will see the two local authorities co-operate in a number of projects.

The two councils have, over the years, enjoyed good relations and have worked together on a number of civic functions. This year Durban Municipality exhibited at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair at the invitation of the Council.

But there had been no binding agreement to seal the twinning arrangement.

Bulawayo mayor, Councillor Thaba Moyo, confirmed that a delegation was set to travel to Durban to formalise the relationship.

“Ican confirm that I will be leading a delegation to the city of Thekwini to complete the signing of the twinning agreement,” he said.

“This will give us the lee-way to explore possible areas were we can work together. Our main aim is for these two cities to help each other in terms of development and boost service delivery,” said the Mayor.

He said BCC would take advantage of this agreement to learn more from the Durban council with the prospect that a number of personnel would be dispatched to Durban for training.

“We are living in modern times now and there is need for us to take a cue from developed cities such as Durban and implement their strategies to our own city,” he said.

Meanwhile the Mayor also revealed that the Durban Council would soon assist in the city’s billing system.

He said they had received countless complaints from residents – hence the need to consult Durban on this problem.

Some of the council’s junior engineers would soon be attached to the South African city for a period yet to be decided.

The Durban council will send a delegation to explore investment opportunities in the Bulawayo, especially within the Small and Medium scale Enterprises (SMEs).
